[music |Alphaville - Dreamscapes - Days Full Of Wonder]

Ganked from scarletk8:
If there is at least one person in your life who you consider a close friend, and who you would not have met without being part of an online community, post this sentence in your journal.
Hm, let me count them:

ohdhalia (met on IRC about 1993 or so)
shechemist (met on NMSU server in early '90s... not sure if we still qualify as "close friends" but we still talk.)
Lej (met on IRC EFNet #perl, don't talk much these days but we were close for a while.)

There is a much longer list of people I've met online whom I still chat with occasionally, but our lives don't cross paths often enough for us to be close friends these days. (My usual estimation is: for every 1000 people I interact with online, about 10 will become acquaintances, and about 1 will become a close friend.)

I would still consider you a somewhat close friend. close enough to invite to say, a wedding. *grin*

Aww. :)

I guess I've always felt somewhat on eggshells with you. I'm glad that we can keep in touch via IRC and LJ, and watching you and ManCoon's relationship evolve has been ... educational. :)

Anyway. Yay for old LC friends. See you in a few months, at the most! :)

dinosaurs

1993?!? I was still mastering the electric typewriter. :)

It gets worse. I was chatting with a friend of mine (who is doing her term paper on "computer mediated conversation"), and I was reminiscing on using VM BITNET RELAY back in 1987. (Then there was ForumNet/ICB, then IRC....) But still. 10+ years ago. Creepy.

Re: dinosaurs

I so totally completely misread "mastering the electric typewriter."

Enough said.

The other way round - there are people I met in real life who I now keep in touch with online much more than I have chance to get together with them in person. Things are so darned hectic these days! Funny though - if I had met Lewis online we probably wouldn't have gotten together because we chatted a few times online after we met.. and his online play style didn't appeal to me at all.. hehe!!

yay cheap net

there are people I met in real life who I now keep in touch with online much more than I have chance to get together with them in person. Things are so darned hectic these days! *nod* I can't say that any big relationship has happened just due to the both of us being online ... but having the 'net as a communication medium has mad my relationship with Jennifer (at the least) be very different than it would be otherwise. (Basically, either spending a knight's ransom on phone bills, or moving closer os that we might figure out whether or not we're really compatible or not. But until she kicks me out, I'll do my best to keep her happy. :)

Re: yay cheap net

"spending a knight's ransom on phone bills"

A knight's ransom in plane tickets is MUCH MUCH more satisfying. hehe
