[music |Kodo - Best of Kodo II - Bird Island]

The score so far this year:

Good monitor (19" NEC Multisync) died mysteriously.
TV died mysteriously. But it came back to life (sigh).
Hard drive in slinky (my server in colorado) died.
Hard drive in speedy (my home linux box) died.
Replacement hard drive for speedy died (mfg date: 2004-08-09. died: 2004-11-??. two months?)
Software update rendered my powerbook unusable earlier today.

So I'm hanging out, drinking Scotch, and re-installing OSX. (I had bought a replacement HD, meaning to put it in "eventually" ... that seems to have become "now". Oh well, it should be an upgrade -- from 4200 RPM 60GB to 5400/80.)

Now I just need to do data recovery off the respective drives.

How's everyone else's hardware karma going this year?

ulterior motives

w[Hardware Karma] was going sucky - but you saved us! You are a superhero!

I'm all about building goodwill for when Rachel has cute, nubile, 12-18 year old friends.

Me? Lech? Nah...

At least the new drive in the Powerbook is behaving itself. Now I just need to get around to merging the saved stuff with the current system snapshot...

Re: ulterior motives

We had to use a teenage babysitter on Friday night... she looked like a cross between high school Buffy and high school Willow (no fooling!) - so maybe you won't have to wait *that* long :)

If you were using her, who was watching Rachel?

...

...

(And I had a huge crush on a friend's daughters' babysitter, back in 'Cruces... of course, 10 years later, turns out that the daughters themselves were more than crush-worthy. I think I used the phrase "so cute she bends space" at one point...)

I envy you your dedication to the birds, so you can ignore (or, at least, properly demote) the stupid office and rumour-mill conversation. Your birds are beautiful and lovely, even if a bit painful.

And I like to hope that your ability to deal with wounded, disoriented, lost birds translates into dealing with Stupid Boys (tm). Good luck. :)

Having said all that (in a somewhat drunken haze), I'll also point out that both of those apply (in a bit of a weird way) to computers as well as organic beasties -- computers have gotten so strange and complex that describing them in terms of little magic goblins is not that weird.

Finally, *hug* and happy holidays. May your Real Job not have anything to say while you have a lovely evening or three entirely to yourself and your loves. :) *hug*

Almost had a motherboard fail on me. Turns out it was false alarm. Other than that, all hardware has been working perfectly for me. *knock on wood*

hardware

It looks like you're well-introduced into the "hm, computer failure, time to drink more beer!" school, though. Granted, the scenery value of being a computer desk consultant is high, but there were more than a few gorgeous women getting utterly trashed on strong beers tonight in Carlsbad.

(Pity you weren't interested in participating, although I don't blame you. Betweeen the traffic and the weather, it was pretty scary -- but it was never more than "cozy" and the selection ... wow.

Re: hardware

Goddamnit. *kicks self* But hey, I have 88 oz of good beer (much thanks to you). So today will be "hm, segmentation fault, time to drink more beer!"

I thought you were heading back to OB though.

Re: hardware

I thought you were heading back to OB though.

I was mostly meaning to, but I thought I'd go by and see how busy it was anyway. When I saw that it was pretty calm (or, at least, not stupid crowded), I thought I'd stop in and have a few.

Yeeek. Guess who should not have driven himself home last night... Got here safe, but I'll try to keep my internal drink-o-meter better calibrated.

Mmmm... Bourbon Barrel Double Bastard. YUM.

J has told me that I have a black thumb for technology... maybe you caught it from me the last time I saw you?

Huh. I hope my hardware is enjoying the trip, at least. :)

I don't think it's your fault. So far, I'm about 50% "that's what I get for living so close to the ocean" and 50% "stuff is made cheap these days".

Oh well. I could always distract myself with a pile of cute tall women found at local beer festivals, or I'll wait a week until Jenn can alter my reality. :)

Any plans for next weekend, esp Saturday morning / noonish? We're thinking of going up the tramway, to let K play in the snow...

Re: *looks guilty*

Sounds fun! If I can keep Alyssa and I well enough. It'll probably be just the two of us joining since J will likely be sleeping. We had a dusting of more snow last night. =)

If I were you I'd wait for Jenn... I think you'd enjoy your time much more with her. ;)

Re: *looks guilty*

Yay for tramway next Saturday! Get healthy, damnit.

And I will of course wait for Jenn.

I was just initially taken aback by the crowd at the Strong Ale festival. "What? Cute women like strong beer?". Then I realized that Jenn would have been there in a heartbeat, and that I probably deserve a good solid whack over the head (with a beer bottle, natch!) for even the thought. :)

"What? Cute women like strong beer?"

Seeing as this weekend was so fabulous, and you brought me yummy strong beer AND a t-shirt, I'll let the head whacking slide. This time.

I live a block away from the ocean myself. No corrosion due to salty air. I must be well shielded from said air though.

Do you have air conditioning? I suspect that would make a huge difference (both the initial filtering, and the fact that AC tends to keep air drier). The TV in particular died during a high humidity phase, and I suspect that is as much a part of the problem as the salt from the sea.

Re: *looks guilty*

Nope, no AC. Trust me, my bedroom COOKED during the summer. Upstairs and having two machines running simultaneously. My room hit 90 F during our dog days of summer. My hardware live through the season.

(Note: if this is shown twice, it is because I got "document contains no data" when I clicked "post comment" *kicks LJ*)

Now that you mention it...

My Yamaha CD burner will not burn cd's anymore. The error message mentions something about a "Power Calibration Error".

I just notice this last night...and the only thing I did to my machine was to install the new dual output video card...

Suck.

You might try a different brand/speed of blank disc; on the other hand, new CDR drives are only 40-50$ these days. *shrug*

heh seeing as how i just read this entry after six days of no internet, hrm lemme, think back, electronic gate opener(30$) mysteriously went missing along with , electronic car door/alarm activation/deactivation device ( 280$ ) which rendered my car undrivable for over a month waiting to get it repaired, power outage took out my power supply ( 80$ ) and my hard drive ( 130 $ ) second power outage took out my graphics card ( 115$ ) third power outage killed my phone ( 60$ ) dogs yanked keyboard of desk and peed on it ( just plain rude ) and my monitor has been on the fritz for some time but i'm too cheap and lazy to send it back in, also, i don't have another monitor to replace it with while the work is being done on it. this doesn't include the three power cords that have died this year for my ibook, the cd rw drive that wont' work with the dvd drive i got as a wedding present or any of the electrical cords the dogs have eaten through. I think the universe is tryign to tell me something.

Many new PCs this year

Let's see, I've lost 2 laptops this year (yes...two) Both of them stolen. I've retired one of my three desktop computers. And I just bought a new laptop, so my old picturebook is going to become an MP3 / DVD player in my entertainment system (with the projector screen (ask me about this!)) I've had zero hard drive failures in my servers though (7 of them at the office), so it's been a good year in the server room.

In other news, I lost my digital recorder, trashed out a mixing board, broke a battery holder to my six-string ovation, dropped both guitars on their necks while drunk (several times), and have managed to get many pieces of equipment rained on throughout the year (thank you Dallas weather).

Sigh...
