new car [Apr. 28th, 2005|11:00 pm]

[music |hard drive going chunka-chunka]

Last week, I lamented the impending retirement of the poor old Subaru. I've known it was coming for a while, so I've been thinking about what to get next for a while. With the news that Suby is on its last legs, I finally got around to serious shopping.

Tuesday I started calling around to different dealerships to see what my options were for a particular car, and to put my name on a waiting list. Surprisingly enough, the second place I called had almost exactly what I was looking for in stock (the "almost" was the interior trim color, everything else was what I wanted)... so I bought it. Meet the new toy:
[2005 Toyota Prius]

It's a 2005 Prius with "super white" exterior paint, gray / burgundy interior (mostly gray), and option package #6.

At the moment, it has about 130 miles on it. :)

This is the first time I've ever bought a new car. I know that the money is not in my favor, especially with this car being in pretty high demand. (Stupid news stories about high cost of gas recently didn't make me any more confident of availability, either.) But the process was pretty painless, I paid basically MSRP+destination fee, and they didn't push the add-ons too hard. Still took four hours to complete the transaction, and I don't make so much money that the check for 31+k$ wasn't a bit of a wince.

But. New car! :)

It drives really well, and has some great geek toys in it (GPS+map, real-time MPG, steering wheel controls, "smart" keyless entry, etc etc). So far I'm averaging right around 40 mpg, and I'm told that will go up slightly after the break-in period. I look forward to taking it on long trips after that, as it is noticably thriftier on cruise control.

Hopefully this Prius will serve me just as well as the Subaru did.

yay new cars

This'll be my first week commuting in it full time. I know I have already had fun with it ... I just need to get to know it. Amazing how much performance / space knowledge I've internalized about my old car.

And I'll likely drive up to SLO sometime soon. I'll honk a greeting as I zip through on the 101. :)

Ooh, look, a ferret!

Yes. Very Shiny.

(To the point where I'm still a bit nervous about driving it, but it'll have to get its first dents eventually...)

Feels much larger than the Suby, although I suspect that it is not all that different. I took some pics of the two together:

2005 Toyota Prius, 1995 Subaru Legacy L

As for actual drivability, I'll just see how a week of commuting goes in it.

Can't wait to introduce you two. :) Not sure when, but if I do take the whole week for July 4th, I'll probably drive out. Can't quite plan on doing SD-to-LC on one tank, but I should be able to get pretty close.

(And do you think you'll be able to make it out here for June 19th? Or will we save the travel effort for S & T's wedding?)

I resemble that remark.

Doesn't look any bigger to me. I thought you were considering flying out, especially since Suby is now parked here? hahahahahaha... If your dad and bro didn't want Suby, you could always just keep it here as your New Mexico car. hahahahahahhahaha.

June 19th? What's that? I'm sure you mentioned it already, but my brain is fried. The red bulls for the drive home took forever to wear off, so I didn't sleep well or much. Sooooo Tired. Don't wanna go to work. Wanna crawl back into my nice warm comfy bed. Not sure what is up with the boys that weekend. Technically, it is my weekend with them, but its Father's Day so the guys may want to see their sons.

slick!

That is a gorgeous and slick car.

Thanks! :)

How are you enjoying your new car?

Maybe the wee Prius will get to meet the famed Momstang at some point. They can sniff snouts or something (tailpipes?). :)

no drooling, i just got it!

Heh. You know, of all the ways I'd enjoy making you drool, "new car" just wasn't on the list. Learn something new every day.

I know you test-drove it, but later said that it would probably not work out. I'd be curious in hearing more about that (although it would not affect my decision, obviously, since I already have it).

I'll let you (and probably the rest of my LJ friends) know how I am liking it as I get used to it. Hopefully people won't get bored with me blathering about it...

lol, there are a few cars out there that will really get me drooling, this is one of them hehe. *wipes up the drool* sorry about that.

Simply too expensive for us. We probably won't get enough out of my current car etc. to make it worthwhile on the gas savings. We were hoping to only have about the same payment we do on my car but in looking into things, it's not gonna happen. =( at least not for awhile. Trust me, hehe I still want one someday. lol *drools some more*

money money money

Its BEUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTIFUL!!! :)

Thanks!

especially with gas prices out in Cali!!

Forget just California -- deliriumdreams and I were paying 2.50 $/gal for midgrade in Phoenix this last weekend. I haven't looked here yet, would not surprise me if midgrade were up to 3.00 $/gal.

(Of course, I haven't put gas into the new car yet, still on first tank. Squeee!)

Sadly, even at 5 $/gal, the math takes a long time to work out in my favor. If I were really just minimizing money outlay (while keeping adequate values of drivability and reliability), I should've gone with a lightly used Civic for 10-15k$, then driven it into the ground.

Even if the Prius can get by on half the gas, that isn't much money (relative to the 2x cost of the car). My monthly commute is about 1200 miles, and I averaged about 19k miles/year on the Suby (26k in 1998-03, 156k in 2005-03). Suby got 22-25mpg, so let's say that I was going through 17000/24 or about 800 gallons a year.

At current prices, that's still less than 2.5k$/year. If I spend half of that, I'm saving 1.2k$/year; assuming a 10 year lifespan, that is only 12k$ total savings (and some of that is 2015 dollars, so "worth less".) Although, if gas continues going up in price, then my savings increase too. The "right answer" is probably to move much closer to work, but ... beach. :-/

On the other hand, I get to feel all righteous and geeky and "ongoing" thrifty / non-polluting, so. (I think the logic is: I have a girlfriend now, so I needed to do something to get my nerd quotient back up a bit... :)

Road Trip!

I suspect you might be driving the prius a bit more. Especially if I have my way...

car phone

Kinda puts a whole new dimension on the phrase "car phone".

And yes, I'm planning on getting a bluetooth phone sometime soon, so I can take advantage of that. :) Glad to hear a report from the field of someone on the receiving end of such a device -- does it work well?
