Favorite Bands [Jan. 7th, 2004|10:15 pm]
[mood |drunkdrunk]
[music |Big Sonic Chill]

What are your favorite bands ever? Intrinsically, or intertwined with an important part of your life, or?

  • The Sisters of Mercy
  • This Mortal Coil
  • Delerium
  • Peter Murphy

And I’ve been lucky enough to see three of those acts in person (all but This Mortal Coil). As much as I bitch about the world, these groups (and many others) can still remind me that there is beauty in the world.

Well, off the top of my head...
Simon and Garfunkel
Steve Taylor
Tom Paxton
the Proclaimers

I've seen BNL, the Proclaimers, Tom Paxton and TMBG live. Bit young to have seen Queen live, couldn't afford tix for the recent S&G reunion tour, and Steve Taylor (the most obscure I've listed here) stopped performing and became a producer before I started going to concerts.

And I'm sure the 2 minutes after I post I'll remember someone I absolutely should list.

Hard choices to make, but...

Obviously, it's going to be hard to select just 5.

Steely Dan
The Cars
Dire Straits
Billy Joel

That's the list of folks that I've got multiple albums from that I find myself continually going to, particularly for my more serious listening. Lately I've been really enjoying Fisher, Human Radio, Gino Vanelli (Big Dreams Never Sleep).

Another idea...

marm0t is proposing something that I thought might be amusing along similar lines to this thread. Shuffle all your music and show the first 20 entries. I'm at a slight disadvantage because I'm currently half-way through re-ripping and verifying my collection. However, here we go:

Out of 4635 tracks:
Gerry Rafferty/Right Down The Line Best of/12-A Dangerous Age
Mozart/String Quartets Vol 2/10-Milan Quartet No 3 in C K IV211 Un poco Adagio
Joni Mitchell/Taming The Tiger/06-Taming The Tiger
David Lanz/Nightfall/05-Water from the Moon
Lightning Seeds/Jollification/07-Feeling Lazy
Various Artists/Dr Demento 20th Anniversary Collection Disc 1/06-Kip Addotta Wet Dream
Steely Dan/Alive In America/08-Third World Man
Crash Test Dummies/A Worms Life/04-Our Driver Gestures
Sisters Of Mercy/Floodland/02-Flood I

Re: Another idea...

The server-side software for the Squeezebox is the first I’ve seen that can even handle my entire collection. Seeing a display that casually mentions stuff like this:
2425 albums with 28041 songs by 2762 artists
is pretty amazing.

I currently just have a bunch of Enya selected. If I shuffle the whole thing, I get...

8. On Your Side from Love & War by Clark, Liz
8. Fast Company from Racing After Midnight by Honeymoon Suite
11. Viking Heart from Teenager by Siberry, Jane
6. Don't Cry for Me Argentina from Am I Not Your Girl? by O'Connor, Sinéad
6. Sirius from 1986-PastPresent by Clannad
