Its BEUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTIFUL!!! :)
Thanks!especially with gas prices out in Cali!!
Forget just California -- deliriumdreams
and I were paying 2.50 $/gal for midgrade in Phoenix this last weekend. I haven't looked here yet, would not surprise me if midgrade were up to 3.00 $/gal.
(Of course, I haven't put gas into the new car yet, still on first tank. Squeee!)
Sadly, even at 5 $/gal, the math takes a long time to work out in my favor. If I were really just minimizing money outlay (while keeping adequate values of drivability and reliability), I should've gone with a lightly used Civic for 10-15k$, then driven it into the ground.
Even if the Prius can get by on half the gas, that isn't much money (relative to the 2x cost of the car). My monthly commute is about 1200 miles, and I averaged about 19k miles/year on the Suby (26k in 1998-03, 156k in 2005-03). Suby got 22-25mpg, so let's say that I was going through 17000/24 or about 800 gallons a year.
At current prices, that's still less than 2.5k$/year. If I spend half of that, I'm saving 1.2k$/year; assuming a 10 year lifespan, that is only 12k$ total savings (and some of that is 2015 dollars, so "worth less".) Although, if gas continues going up in price, then my savings increase too. The "right answer" is probably to move much closer to work, but ... beach. :-/
On the other hand, I get to feel all righteous and geeky and "ongoing" thrifty / non-polluting, so. (I think the logic is: I have a girlfriend now, so I needed to do something
to get my nerd quotient back up a bit... :)
