easily lead: the cd meme [May. 19th, 2005|08:40 pm]

[mood |blahblah]

And now for the CD version:

1. Total number of albums I own on CD:

Somewhere north of 2500. (A partial, out-of-date list dating from about 2002, can be found here.) I own a very few (<10) pieces of vinyl, almost all old Sisters of Mercy releases.

2. The last CD I bought:

Three CDs by Sarah Fimm when she opened for Peter Murphy this last weekend.

3. The last CD I listened to:

Recorded? Snake River Conspiracy's Sonic Jihad was in the car.

Live music? Peter Murphy at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., this last Sunday; Sarah Fimm opened.

4. Five CDs that I listen to a lot or that mean a lot to me:

So very hard to narrow it down to just 5.

This Mortal Coil - filigree & shadow
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
Peter Murphy - Deep
Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Delirium - Karma

5. Five people I'm passing this onto, and why:

Still not passing this on.

Three entries three days in a row? Awesome - a gal could get used to this! :)

you can't say "meme" without saying "me! me!"

a gal could get used to this!

I'm sure you could. Whether I'll let you, or not, now... that's a better question.

You need to do the music version at some point -- I think you've only done the movie one? There's a book version that I will try to post soon, too.

Much happiness on Mitzi grogginess and Sis's partial return. :)

I did. My friends are mean and make me do terrible things.

But you want to pass it on.[/jedi_mind_trick]

Nope. Feel free to lift it if you like, but I'm not going to burden anyone with it.

1. Obsessive much? hehe

2. I need to borrow those.

3. Very excellent album that will have to be put on the ipod tomorrow. haha.
Even more excellent show. Still drooling over the crazy man.

4. Never listened to the first or fourth as an album in it's intirety. Is it worth it or just the individual songs? (I love both Deep and LE as albums listened to straight through)

yes, i do know how (and when) to hyphenate "anal retentive"

1. Obsessive much? hehe

You know better than to ask.

Actually, the fact that I have all of them in a database (which hasn't been updated for a while for reasons that are best described as yak shaving) is mostly happenstance and completism. (Also somewhat motivated by wanting a complete list for insurance purposes.)

When I first started work out of college, I'd bring in a box of CDs every week or so, for listening to during the day. We weren't on the 'net full-time at that point, so I ended up entering the tracks myself. At some point I realized that I had about two-thirds of my CDs entered, so I made the effort to complete the list. (This was back when I had "only" 600 or so.)

I did a good job of keeping that list up-to-date until the player I was using stopped being updated. I just haven't gotten around to building a new version yet, or translating to a different format. It's all a part of my grand scheme to catalog / rip / scan my CDs to the point where I can put them away and never have to pull them out physically again.

2. I need to borrow those [Sarah Fimm CDs].

I will be ripping them this weekend. Might actually try to start building my big storage box for the ripping project this weekend... got bit by that bug today for some reason. But either way, I can hopefully get you a digital copy soonish.

3. Very excellent album that will have to be put on the ipod tomorrow. haha.
Even more excellent show. Still drooling over the crazy man.

SRC is odd; I like them, but I feel a little dirty for that. I suppose guilty pleasures are the best sorts. (At least they have good taste in covers: "Lovesong" and "How Soon Is Now"?!?). Ha, she really was a stripper exotic dancer.

Peter is awesome of course. Rather more freaky than when I saw him a few years ago, but...

[Are filigree & shadow and Floodland] worth it or just the individual songs?

Totally worth it. f&s is probably my favorite straight-through album (which I gush over embarassingly here and here). Floodland is less cohesive (and the last 2-3 tracks are just tacked-on "CD bonus tracks") but the core of the album is fantastic. Make some time to listen to it straight through, maybe the next time you're driving somewhere (once the speakers are fixed, sigh).

Re: yes, i do know how (and when) to hyphenate "anal retentive"

1. Ever heard of a rhetorical question? I do know how anal retentive you are. As a sidenote I hate to admit, I have a cassette/cd/digital music list from several years ago when I got sick of standing in the store trying to remember if I had a particular album in cassette (in which case it needed replacement) or cd (in which case I hated bringing home a second copy) or just digital (in which case I had to decide if the liner notes, support the artist, etc, were worth it) And I know just how much you love to shave, yak or otherwise.

2. Lemme know when you do. I keep thinking I need to organize my music collection a bit better and finish ripping cds since I finally have enough storage space. But first, I need to fix whatever is going on with my desktop. And before that, I need to clean off my desk. And prior to that, I need to clean the rest of the room. Nerbling at its finest.

3. I'll admit that I like everything I've heard by SRC. But I discovered them at an odd time in my life, which may account for that. I can name a few pleasures I like better than guilty ones.... and since when do you have a problem with "exotic dancers"?

With a voice like that, Peter can be as crazy as he wants.

4. I'll try to put on F&S tonight and listen to it straight through. I completely trust your taste in music. Except that bit about Meat Beat Manifesto. EWWWWW. Maybe I can get the speakers fixed before Kira and my Memorial Day Trip (tm). But it seems a bit hedonistic to fix the music before fixing the bodywork and belts... Although I suppose I should get the belts done before any road trips...

TSoM vinyl

I might not own mine anymore -- they were in a trailer that broken into a few months back. The next time I'm in Denver I can find out.

A friend-of-a-friend here in San Diego has a medium-sized but fascinating collection -- when I first started flipping through her vinyl and CDs, I started laughing. She thought I was making fun of her, so I had to explain that I was just giddy at the great stuff she had in there.
